On Orders Over $200*
This Natural Kani White Buteh Pashmina Shawl is handwoven on a traditional handloom using the ancient Kani technique — each colour placed thread by thread using small wooden spools called kanis, guided by a coded pattern notation known as a talim. The result is a shawl whose design is woven into the very structure of the fabric, not applied after.

Kashmir's Most Intricate Woven Tradition
Kani weaving is one of the most technically complex textile arts in the world — practised exclusively in the Kashmir Valley, with no true parallel anywhere else. The name comes from the small wooden spool, called a kani, that the weaver uses in place of a conventional shuttle. Each spool carries a single colour of thread, and a single shawl may require hundreds of kanies working simultaneously across the warp.
Working without a printed pattern visible on the loom, the weaver reads a coded notation called a talim — a line-by-line instruction sheet that governs the precise sequence of colours across every row. Complex all-over designs with dense floral fields and interlocking paisley motifs can take a single master weaver between six months and eighteen months to complete on the handloom.
This is not factory production. It is a lifelong skill, transmitted from master to apprentice across centuries in the weaving villages around Srinagar — particularly Kanihama, the village from which the craft takes its name.

Yes. Every PureKashmir Kani shawl is woven from 100% genuine Changthangi cashmere — the fibre combed from the undercoat of Changthangi goats raised on the high Ladakhi plateau at altitudes above 14,000 feet. Composition is verified by independent textile testing laboratories. We hold GI Authorised User status for Kashmir Shawl making through our parent company Shadha Crafts, and every piece comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Anywhere from three months to a year and a half — and there is no shortcut. A Kani weaver sets up hundreds of individual spools before a single row of pattern can be woven, and the work proceeds colour by colour, row by row, guided by a handwritten notation called a talim. A shawl with a simple border may be finished in three to four months of sustained work. A piece with dense all-over pattern — the classic butti-filled field that defines the finest Kani shawls — can occupy a master weaver for the better part of two years. Unlike most luxury goods, there is no accelerated version. The loom sets the pace, and no step can be skipped without the pattern collapsing entirely. What reaches you is the accumulated patience of someone's hands, woven into cloth.
Kashmir produces several types of shawl. A plain pashmina is woven without pattern on a conventional loom. Sozni shawls are plain-woven pashminas decorated afterwards with hand needle embroidery. A Kani shawl is different in an important way: the pattern is created entirely within the weaving itself — there is no embroidery. The design is built into the fabric structure, thread by thread, using the kani spool technique. This makes Kani the most technically demanding of all Kashmir shawl types, and historically the most prized.
Dry cleaning is always the safest option and what we recommend for Kani pieces, given the intricacy of the woven structure. If you prefer to hand wash, use cold water with a very small amount of baby shampoo or mild wool wash — never rub, only gently press. Roll in a clean towel to remove excess water, then lay flat to dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never wring, tumble dry, or hang wet. Store folded in a breathable cotton bag away from direct light.

Absolutely. Because every Kani shawl is woven by hand on a manual loom, no two pieces are identical. Minor variations in colour saturation, motif spacing, or weft density are not defects — they are the signature of the individual weaver who produced the piece. A master weaver reads the same talim differently from another; this human interpretation is precisely what distinguishes a genuine handwoven Kani from machine-jacquard imitations.
